At some point in the future I very much want to paint the Sacred Heart of Jesus. But this is an intimidating prospect – to portray the divine. How does he look? How should he look? I find myself, like countless artists of every generation, influenced by a certain typical representation of him: longish hair, beard, kind eyes, and the obligatory robe. But there is still subtly in the details left to explore.
So for now, devoid of color and depth, here is what I have come up with. It’s just a crude sketch, but I think this is where I’ll eventually start when I begin the painting. It’s one I would prefer to work on exclusively and not juggle among other projects, as I sometimes do.
